Class Information

Teaching Staff : Mrs Blair, Mrs Whitfield, Mr Williams and Mrs Sutton

PE:

Currently PE is on a Monday and a Wednesday.  Please ensure you child is dressed appropriately for any weather as outdoor learning will take place as often as possible.  We have a play and fitness break both morning and afternoon with PE activities to engage the children.

Water:

We ask that your child brings in their water bottle each day. Children are encouraged to drink water throughout the day, and we feel that it is important for them to have their own named water bottle in school at all times.

Book bag:

It is essential to your child's progress that their book bag is brought to school each day. It is important not only for reading books and other items which go home, but also for any correspondence that needs to go to parents and carers. Please check book bags regularly for letters and ensure that any learning your child has completed and brought home is removed. We recommend that water bottles are not transported in book bags as books may become damaged if they leak.

Reading:

Reading is a very important part of the curriculum and integral in a child's life.

Reading books are first read over several days within Read Write Inc. phonics sessions, and once completed are then sent home to be read again.

The children also have a free choice 'Choosing Book'. These may be too tricky for them to read themselves but are to be shared at home to support developing a love of reading. These can be changed as often as children wish and you will see they have a sticker on the front, or inside, stating that it is their 'Choosing Book'.  A group of children have now progressed off the phonics scheme and will be having daily guided reading sessions to develop their comprehension skills.  For home reading and fluency practise they will be self -selecting books which are Year Two appropriate. Please continue to support your child with regular practise as they continue through the incremental steps on their reading journey.

We ask that the reading books and records are kept in book bags and brought into school daily.

Maths:

In year one children begin to count in 2's, 5's and 10's.  In year two children become confident at recalling the tens, five, two and three times tables, including the associated division facts.  Practising these on 'Hit the Button' allows children to compete against themselves and improve their scores for speedy recall.  They will learn to apply the division facts associated with these tables.   Please continue to play board games and to practice quick totals with two dice to help master those little number bonds too.

Children recognise coins and notes and learn to calculate with money and give change.  This term we will be exploring measuring length, height, mass and temperature using standard units of measure - metres, centimetres, kilograms and grams, also millilitres and litres.  Measuring is fun to do at home and in real life situations.  Baking, with careful measuring, and playing shops can also support learning in maths.

Have fun enriching your child's maths journey at home.
