English

This term in English, we will be exploring a range of different stimuli to inspire our writing. Using a variety of texts, images and prompts, pupils will practise writing in different forms, including diary entries, persuasive letters, descriptive pieces and more. Through these activities, children will continue to develop their vocabulary, sentence structure and ability to write creatively and for different purposes.

Guided Reading

• Year 5/6: The Listeners by Walter de La Mare - using the poem to develop inference skills, discuss atmosphere and mystery, and explore the language and imagery used by the poet.
• Year 4: The Humans by Jonny Marx and Charlie Davis - using the text to develop comprehension skills while exploring themes of kindness, friendship and what it means to be human.

In guided reading, children are encouraged to discuss their ideas, listen to others and support their opinions with evidence from the text.

Maths

• Year 5/6: Algebra and Statistics - learning how to solve simple algebraic problems, interpret data and present information using a range of charts and graphs.
• Year 4: Fractions - recognising and finding equivalent fractions, counting in fractions and solving problems involving fractions.

Science

• Year 5/6: will investigate the enquiry question “How reflective are space blankets?”, exploring reflection, light and how materials can help to retain heat.
• Year 4: will explore the enquiry question “How does food affect muscle fatigue?”, carrying out investigations to learn how nutrition and exercise can impact the body.

Across both year groups, pupils will take part in hands-on investigations and record their findings in different ways.

History

Who should go on the £10 banknote?
In History, pupils will explore the question “Who should go on the £10 banknote?”, learning about significant historical figures and debating who has made the greatest impact on British society.

RE

What is a worldview?

In RE, pupils will explore the question “What is a worldview?”, learning about different beliefs, values and perspectives, and reflecting on how these can influence the way people live their lives.

Computing

Programming: Intro to Python

In Computing, pupils will be introduced to Python programming, learning how to create simple programs, use commands and understand how coding can be used to solve problems.

Art

Mixed Media & Painting: Portraits

In Art, pupils will explore mixed media and painting techniques to create portraits, experimenting with colour, texture and composition inspired by a range of artists.

Music

Composing and Performing a leavers song
In Music, as we prepare to say goodbye to our Year 6s pupils will work together to compose and perform a leavers’ song, exploring lyrics, melody and performance techniques to create a meaningful final piece.

Spanish

Culture

In Spanish, pupils will explore Spanish culture, learning about traditions, celebrations and everyday life while developing their speaking and listening skills.

PSHE

Changing Body

In PSHE, pupils will explore the topic of changing bodies, learning about physical and emotional changes in an age-appropriate way. Children will be taught in their separate year groups to ensure that learning is suitable and relevant for each age and stage of development.

PE – Mondays and Thursdays

Oak Class will have PE on a Monday and Thursday this term.

• Monday - children will be taking part in Tag Rugby.
• Thursday - children will be taking part in Rounders with our JB Sports coach Mr Giles.

Please ensure children come to school in their PE kit on Mondays and Thursdays.

Points to note

Reading

In Oak Class, we continue to place great importance on reading, both in and out of school. Regular reading helps children build confidence, deepen understanding and develop a love of stories and learning.

Children read regularly in school through guided reading, whole-class reading and independent reading time. We encourage pupils to read at home as often as possible, and our school library offers a wide range of fantastic books. Children are also welcome to bring a favourite book from home to enjoy.

Water

To help children stay focused and healthy, please ensure your child brings a clearly named water bottle to school each day containing only water. Children are encouraged to drink regularly throughout the day.
